Senators Senators forward Chris Neil and wife Caitlin ask Sens fans to support their walk, roll and run for Roger's HouseRoger's House
OTTAWA - - The Sens Foundation announced today its plans for the ninth annual Scotiabank Walk, Roll & Run for Roger's House presented by the Ottawa Citizen, which will be held on Sunday, June 17, at Scotiabank Place. Senators forward Chris Neil and his wife Caitlin, the honorary chairs of Roger's House, will participate in the event and are encouraging Sens fans to take part in the day's activities or pledge support for them.
"As the parents of three healthy children, the thought of losing one of them is just so inconceivable," said Caitlin Neil. "The words paediatric and palliative should never be used in the same sentence, but unfortunately it is a reality. Our community is very fortunate to have a facility like Roger's House to support these courageous children and their families."
The Neils helped introduce 10 Roger's House patients who will take part in the fundraising event during today's launch. Known as Roger's Dream Team, the 10 children all use the facility regularly for respite, pain and symptom management and when transitioning from the hospital back to home after a prolonged hospitalization. These children, their families, the Neils and major corporate sponsors, including Scotiabank, the Ottawa Citizen, Nordion, Enterprise, PwC, and Irving Oil, will lead the charge to make this year's event a financial success.
Roger's House receives its base funding from the Ontario government but counts on the community to support the Sens Foundation, which makes up the shortfall and ensures an enhanced level, quality and quantity of care is provided. The Sens Foundation will provide Roger's House with about 25 per cent of annual operating budget this year, plus additional funding for capital expenditures, service to Quebec families and contributions to two endowments.
Chris Neil is hopeful that Sens fans and community members will pledge their support to he and Caitlin's cause through online donations. Later this summer, the Neils will treat their top three donors, along with one guest each, to a special dinner.
This year's Scotiabank Walk, Roll & Run for Roger's House features the Irving Oil Tot-Trot, and the PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP 2km and Enterprise 5km route. The Nordion Family Fun Zone, which includes Sens Street Tour activities, balloon artists, face painters, live entertainment, a barbecue lunch and much more, also returns this year. Families are encouraged to make this part of their Father's Day celebrations.
Members of the community can support the event by registering and collecting pledges or by sponsoring Chris and Caitlin Neil at www.sensfoundation.com.
Last year's popular T-shirt design contest is being held again this year. Children are encouraged to submit creative necktie designs in honour of former Senators assistant coach Roger Neilson, who was renowned for wearing a crazy assortment of colourful ties and for whom Roger's House is named. The winning design will adorn the front of this year's Walk, Roll & Run T-shirt.
Roger's House is the charity of choice of the Sens Foundation. Now in it's sixth year of operation, it has had more than 1,760 admissions from across Ontario and western Quebec. The welcoming home-away-from-home atmosphere comforts children with life-limiting illnesses and their families that are admitted to the state-of-the-art, eight-bedroom facility, where dedicated professionals and volunteers provide the best in compassionate care and support.
