ABOUT THE SHIELDING HEROES CAMPAIGN

Access to personal protective equipment (PPE) has become increasingly problematic as COVID-19 cases continue to surge. Our healthcare workers put themselves at risk daily to save lives and keep our community safe. The volume of PPE required to keep doctors, nurses, and their patients safe in this crisis is daunting– we have to ensure they have the PPE they need when they need it. Millions of disposable PPE Face Shields will be needed nationwide each month. Bacteria micro-droplets can become airborne and can be transmitted through the eyes, nose, and mouth. The importance of access to both masks and shields gives our healthcare workers a much-needed line of defense to keep everyone safe.

After an appeal from Dr. Anna-Theresa Lobos, Critical Care Physician and Medical Director of CHEO’s Medical Emergency Team, at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) about the looming shortage of personal protective equipment for frontline health workers, local business leader Darcy Walsh of Edelman reached out to Brendan Bell, retired NHL player, Danielle Robinson of the Ottawa Senators Foundation and HP Canada’s President & CEO Mary Ann Yule. Working together, they have been able to develop a made-in-Ontario solution by innovating a PPE Face Shield Frame & Face Shield design that was approved by Health Canada.

The SHIELDING HEROES Campaign led by the Ottawa Senators Foundation is seeking to raise the $500,000+ required to cover the costs associated with the production of 40,000+ PPE Face Shield Frames & 120,000 Face Shields for frontline healthcare heroes throughout the region for the next 12 weeks. More than $250,000 has already been secured for the campaign with contributions from Alstom, Claridge Homes, Edelman, HP Canada, Horizant Solutions, Nautical Lands Group, Thistledown Foundation and the Ottawa Senators Foundation.

HP Canada is mobilizing their Digital Manufacturing Partner Network to design, validate and produce essential parts for medical responders and hospitals. As such they brought LEO Lab forward as the production partner for the SHIELDING HEROES Campaign and required PPE Face Shield Frame & Face Shields. LEO Lab is a state-of-the-art custom orthotic production facility offering both traditional and 3D Printed devices. LEO Lab invested in the first HP Multi-Jet Fusion 3D Printer in Canada, enabling the company to bring innovation to the market place that hadn’t been seen before. With an ability to offer traditionally manufactured, 3D Printed and hybrid devices (combining 3D Printing with soft adhered materials), they are able to offer the industry the best of all words. The introduction of this high-tech equipment made LEO Lab a pioneer in the industry and one of only a handful globally that have done so. HP Canada has sourced and guaranteed the supplies required for all parts of the PPE Face Shield Frame production process. The first PPE Face Shield Frames from the SHIELDING HEROES Campaign will be delivered to Ottawa Hospitals the week of April 13.

LEO Lab will produce up to 500 PPE Face Shields units daily, 2,100 weekly, at a cost of $12. Each unit includes one (1) Face Shield Frame and three (3) Face Shields making shielding heroes very affordable. Additionally, the 3D printed Face Shield Frame can be sterilized up to four times, driving cost down further as compared to disposable face shields which must be collected and disposed of (burned) as biohazard waste.

Weekly distribution of the PPE Face Shield Frames & Face Shields will support hospitals in the Local Health Integration Networks Champlain region as follows:

  • 1,100 to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario
  • 800 to one of the following hospitals in Ottawa in a rotation: Hôpital Montfort, Queensway-Carleton Hospital, Bruyère Continuing Care Inc., The Ottawa Heart Institute, The Ottawa Hospital and the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group
  • 200 to one of the following rural hospitals and/or long-term care facilities each week located in Almonte, Arnprior, Carleton Place, Perth, Renfrew and Smiths Falls.

We would like to the thank the following community leaders for their support and dedication to ensuring the safety of our frontline healthcare workers.

All donations made to the Sens Shielding Heroes Campaign will receive a Canadian charitable tax receipt.
